NWRC Joinery students visit Beech Hill View

Braidwater recently welcomed students and lecturers from the North West Regional College (NWRC) Greystone campus to their Beech Hill View development to see first-hand all elements of joinery in practice.

Pictured are NWRC Level 2 Woodworking skills students at Beech Hill View along with Mark Smith (far left), College Lecturer, NWRC, Jason Spratt (far right), ELO, NWRC and Adam McKinley (2nd from right), College Technician, NWRC.

The Braidwater Group is one of Northern Ireland’s leading house builders and has close to 50 years’ experience in the construction industry and a range of developments located throughout the region from Derry-Londonderry to the region’s capital Belfast.

The NWRC students are currently studying Level 2 OCN in Woodworking skills which builds the practical skills and knowledge to develop in this trade area.  Recruitment for courses starting in September ’24 has already opened and an open day at the Limavady Campus will take place on Thursday 29th February from 12noon to 8:00pm.

Braidwater’s Sean McWilliams, Contracts Manager, gives an insight into all involved in the installation of a timber frame kit.

Darren Farnan, marketing manager at the Braidwater Group, was delighted with the NWRC link up and site visit:

‘The site visit by Mark Smith and his Level 2 students was an excellent opportunity for all to see first-hand the various stages of construction which involves joinery from the timber frame kit install to second fix.

‘Indeed, feedback from the students was extremely positive and the visit provided plenty of information and perhaps some food for thought!’

Sean McWilliams, Braidwater Contracts Manager, explains the process of craning in a timber frame kit to the NWRC students.

Mark Smith, Lecturer in Carpentry & Joinery, NWRC, explained why the educational visit was of importance to students.

‘The visit to the Braidwater site was top class and gave our students a good understanding of what is required from a joiner on a major construction site.

‘All of our students are already in placements and this further enhances their knowledge of the industry which ranges from first fix flooring and roofing, first fix frames, partitions and stairs, to second fix.’

In concluding, Mark added: ‘On behalf of the North West Regional College, I’d like to pass on our thanks to Darren, Sean and all the Braidwater team for giving us all a great insight into an active construction site.’
